Traditions

Block U – Sitting prominently on the hillside in the foothills north of campus, the 100-foot tall block U is one of the University’s most visible symbols. It was originally constructed in 1905 of lime, then reconstructed two years later in cement. In 2002, it was joined on the hillside by the giant illuminated Olympic rings that became one of the many symbols of the Olympics. In 2006, the Block U was completely rebuilt and fitted with white and crimson lights. When a Athletic event is underway the U shines white. When we win, it flashes crimson and white, giving students and Salt Lake residents alike the latest news on how Utah teams have fared.

“Pride of Utah” - The University of Utah Marching Band with the Crimson Line perform at all home games, selected away games, and Bowl games throughout the football season. The Marching Utes annually perform for over 300,000 people. Considered one of the University of Utah's great ambassadors with students representing virtually every academic discipline, the "Pride of Utah" continues to be the most visible performance ensemble within the School of Music.

Fight Song – “Utah Man”

VERSE - I am a Utah man, sir, and I live across the green. Our gang, it is the jolliest that you have ever seen. Our coeds are the fairest and each one’s a shining star. Our yell, you hear it ringing through the mountains near and far.

CHORUS - Who am I, sir? A Utah Man am I. A Utah Man, sir, and will be ’til I die; Ki-yi!

VERSE - We’re up to snuff; we never bluff, we’re game for any fuss, no other gang of college men dare meet us in the muss. So fill your lungs and sing it out and shout it to the sky, we’ll fight for dear old Crimson, for a Utah Man am I.

GO UTES!

VERSE (Usually not sung at games) And when we prom the avenue, all lined up in a row, and arm in arm and step in time as down the street we go. No matter if a freshman green, or in a senior’s gown, the people all admit we are the warmest gang in town.

CHORUS (same) VERSE

We may not live forever on this jolly good old sphere, but while we do we’ll live a life of merriment and cheer. And when our college days are o’er and night is drawing nigh, with parting breath we’ll sing that song: “A Utah Man Am I.

THE MUSS – The Mighty Utah Student Section has been a vital part of Utah’s rise to national prominence in football. Loud student support is integral part to the success of all Utah’s student-athletes. The Football MUSS created in 2002, will celebrate its tenth season in 2011 and has grown to its maximum capacity of 6,000 members. As such it creates one of the best home field advantages in the nation. Meanwhile, the Basketball MUSS is working to fill the student section at the John M. Hunstman Center. The Gymnastics MUSS has become part of the massive support for Utah’s Red Rocks. For more information please visit http://www.alumni.utah.edu/muss

UTE WALK - Listen for the drum call to the Ute Walk 2.5 hours before each home game on the corner of Guardsman Way and 5th South where the football team will be arriving to walk down to the stadium. Come line the route and cheer the Utes to victory before the game! You will also have the chance to receive exclusive Ute Walk give-a-ways or an autographed football from Coach Whittingham!

MUSS Traditions

3rd Down Jump: Third downs are critical, especially in close games. To make things as difficult as possible for the opposing team, the 6,000 students in the MUSS jump up and down while shouting at the top of their lungs anytime it’s a 3rd down, creating noise so deafening that opposing players can’t hear their own snap count, often leading to penalties.

1st Down Signal: Whenever the Utes get a first down, The MUSS comes together in Unison to help the officials signal the first down, raising their hands and voices before making the signal while shouting “First Down.”

False Start Tally: Whenever the opposing team receives a false start penalty The MUSS hangs a ‘five’ in front of the student section indicating the five yard penalty. There is a running total for the entire season and a line of “fives” will always be in front of The MUSS section.
