Olympic cauldron set for relocation, refurbishment

The 2002 Winter Olympic Cauldron will be temporarily relocated this week.

As part of the Ken Garff Performance Zone expansion at Rice-Eccles Stadium, the Olympic Cauldron will be temporarily transferred to a secure location and receive a full refurbishment. Weather permitting, the Olympic Cauldron will be lifted via cranes and leave campus by truck on Feb. 13, 2020 from 12-12:30 p.m.

The refurbishment of the Olympic Cauldron is intended to lengthen its lifespan and preserve this important piece of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Once complete—the process is estimated to require around one year—the restored cauldron will be installed at its new permanent home outside Rice-Eccles Stadium, just north of the ticket office. Construction is already underway.

When returned, the cauldron will be placed on a high pedestal and be outside the stadium for visitors to enjoy year-round. Construction of the Olympic Cauldron’s future home is currently underway as the University prepares to celebrate and preserve the heritage of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
